i tend to think locally, listen locally
Do you listen to bluegrass? What comes to mind is the excellent Country Mountain Bluegrass CD [warning: link plays samples of the music when loaded], anything by the Avett Brothers (from Concord, Cabarrus Co.), the Carolina Chocolate Drops (out of Durham, string band)... or anyone who plays the Mt Airy Fiddlers' Convention.

If you're interested in alt-country, there's Whiskytown out of Raleigh. From Chapel Hill, the Squirrel Nut Zippers made it big (not familiar with their music, though). If you're interested in the local metal/doom/death metal scene, I can ask my brother *g* Maybe US Christmas is still together? (from Marion) Back in the day the big band was Corrosion of Conformity (Raleigh).
