Clan Mitchell Not-A-Kinkmeme
Because I am starting to, very tentatively, get my writing mojo back, and because everything I am writing is eight thousand billion million words long, and because we were talking about running a Clan Mitchell thing-a-thon a while back and then we all kind of wandered off ooh shiny, I thought it might be cool to do a Clan Mitchell not-a-kinkmeme. (By which I mean, the prompts and responses can be porn or not-porn based on individual preference.)

The way it works is nice and simple:

-- Leave a prompt. It can be simple or detailed; it can specify characters or not. (The only thing that [personal profile] ivorygates and I ask is that there be nothing with things we're actively working on for others to write, so no Gedulah or any of IG's active storylines. Sidestories from Roll With It are cool by me, but not anything more future than what's been written so far; Gedulah's out, since there's a lot more canon than what people have seen.) One prompt per comment; multiple comments are fine!

-- Browse around the prompts, and if one strikes your fancy, fill it. (Both prompts and fills can be anonymous or logged-in. There can be more than one fill for a prompt. In fact, the more the merrier!)

-- Repeat until we all get bored.

Prompts should revolve around the Clan in some way, whether being Cam or Cammie's version. If you've got a specific 'verse in mind (Broken Wings/Howling/Roll With It, "mainline" Cammieverse, Mezzanine), include that in the prompt. If it's "any Mitchell-containing universe", you don't need to specify.

Prompts and fills with OpenID are welcome, and if somebody who's not mostly avoiding LJ wants to post a link in [livejournal.com profile] clanmitchell please feel free :)

Have you ever watched a show and randomly thought that a character was part of the Mitchell clan in some way? Even if they don't know it?

Examples: Kathy Stabler (Law and Order: SVU); The O'Hara Siblings from Psych; Alec Hardison from Leverage; Mal, Zoe, Wash, or Kaylee from Firefly; Someone from the Enterprise, etc.

Any crossover that has that idea would be awesome.

Lieutenant Pete Mitchell of Top Gun, perhaps?

Gary Mitchell, James Kirk's best friend.

I might be shot for this, but I've never actually watched Top Gun. You write it and I will though. ;-)

Lt Pete Mitchell: it's (maybe) a small world after all
Funny thing, but Pete never really thought of "Mitchell" as a being common last name. It wasn't Smith or Jones or Johnson (there had been four Johnsons in his class back in high school, and two of them were "Eric"), and yeah, it might not have been exactly unique -- there had been other Mitchells in school, just never in his year -- but he didn't run into other Mitchells all that often. Even if there were likely other Mitchells in college -- big state school, so the odds were more than fair -- they weren't in NROTC and he never ran into any in his classes, and then there were none in flight school and none in any of his squadrons. Of course, there were more Mitchells in the Navy -- at least five at every base he'd ever lived on, according to said bases' phone books -- but bases weren't exactly small, and again, "Mitchell" wasn't exactly unique. Just -- not common.

Or so he'd thought.

And then Miramar had been deeded over to the Marines, and he'd been forced to trade sunny and clement San Diego for sunny and inclement Ass-End-Of-Nowhere, Nevada.

And then it got weird.

Granted, Ass-End-Of-Nowhere was a good 350 miles from South-Sandy-McBumblefuck, where the Air Force lived, but when you cut through all the posturing and the rivalry and the bullshit you're left with a bunch of guys (and not a few girls; quite a few more, in recent years) whose lives only make sense from upwards of 30,000 feet, whose checks are all cut with the same rubber stamp and who like as not have all mostly been in (or above) all the crapass shitsvill pushpins on the map, and there's a certain brotherhood in that. (And sisterhood? Whatever; tomayto and tomahto and marriage might have made him more PC but damned if it made him any more articulate.) There's a sense that you can just walk into a bar, in jeans and tees and tags -- leather jacket optional -- and have someone clear a space for you, have someone ask after your bird of choice and no, they do not mean your girlfriend.

And Pete's been down to Nellis and Nellis has been up to him, and he's kicked zoomie ass in darts and had his own ass handed to him on the end of a pool cue, has had zoomies buy him a beer because they remembered his name from a decade before, and he's bought beer for the zoomies whose names he didn't recall (because he's always been shit with names) but who had eyes that said they'd needed one. (Lotta weird shit out at Nellis, lotta pilots who'd let their flight quals go for want of time while working on something -- else; something that stank of intelligence.) And sure, a bar is a bar is a bar and an OC is an OC is an OC, and the first time someone up at Nellis asked if he was related to some other Mitchell he'd shrugged it off. And the second and the third and the forth.

By the fifth though, it was starting to get a little irksome. Especially when the questions started coming from his own people.

Apparently there were a lot of Mitchells in the Air Force. And apparently a lot of them were pilots (apparently predating the formation of the Air Force, stretching as far back as World War One and, possibly, the early innovations of the airplane -- and apparently the zoomies are all well up on their history, or at least the ones in Nellis are very, very bored). And apparently the fact that he was a pilot named Mitchell and not related to any branch of this mythic family of fliers (of vets, really, because it seemed that the Mitchells served in every branch, even the Coast Guard (Rory Mitchell, flies a helo out of Miami, and are you sure you're not related? Because really, you look just like him--) and the Air Force might have gotten the lion's share but there were soldiers and sailors and marines in the mix there, too).

By the seventeenth, Pete was beginning to wonder if he should start wearing a nametag -- one with some other guy's name. True, he didn't mind it when a zoomie offered to buy him a drink, but cashing in on drinks owed to other Mitchells had felt rather skeevy, once he'd sobered up again and realized that half the shots he'd downed had been in someone else's name. Well, first name.

At one point Charlie (yes, he and his wife almost always refer to each other by call-sign, and no, that isn't weird, and no, he will not divert onto the tangent wherein he Explains Their Reasoning) had made noises about researching his family tree, because hey, maybe these were a bunch of long-lost cousins or something, and while that was kinda fun to contemplate (because it's not like he's got any other living family (blood family) and at least this would be family where they've got something in common) between their jobs and the kids and her family -- and just about everything else in their lives that they barely had time for as it was -- the idea hadn't exactly gained momentum beyond the initial thought.

It was nice though, to have a silly little private daydream wherein everyone else was right and he was wrong, where his grandfather had been the black sheep who'd run away to join the circus (or The Circus, hey, because every boy's secret family fantasy always involved at least one spy) and they hadn't known he'd had a kid who'd had a kid, hadn't known that he'd died in 'Nam and that his wife had followed so soon after, hadn't known that they'd left a little boy behind who had to be remanded to state care (not that his foster parents hadn't been decent, but then he'd died while Pete was in college and then she'd followed before he was out of flight school (and the reasons he'd let them chain him to a desk after Nick was born were ones he never let himself examine closely) and as the foster kid the extended family, which hadn't been all that much to begin with, hadn't been all that interested in him since he outgrew being cute). That they hadn't known because -- if they did -- then they would have done something about it, and maybe he could have gone without some of the more interesting scars on his psyche. (And maybe he would still be flying.)

That there was this whole big family of servicemen and women -- so many of them pilots, like the need to touch the sky wasn't just in his blood but in his genes, laid down into his very bedrock before he was even a glint in his daddy's eye -- and at any point he could hitch a flight back east (he knew they were East, just a bit fuzzy on the where of it) and ring the bell, say "hi, I'm Pete, I used to be a Navy pilot and my grandfather was Philip Mitchell" -- and they'd put the two and two together and take the rest of it as read, and invite him in with open arms.

One day, maybe, it would be true.

One day, maybe, but not today.

And likely not tomorrow either.

(It was a really good dream.)

Oh, god. I don't know whether Shawn meeting the Clan is genius or torture. Both.

Seekrit Mitchells
"No," McCoy said flatly. "No. I am not, Jim. You wanna, you go, but I am staying right here. By myself. I don't need anybody holding my hand."

"You are no fun, McCoy. Tonight we're gonna go out, see the sights--"

"I can find the library. I can find my classes. I can even find this great little noodle place not too far from here, because it's in the cadet manual. I pickled my liver in med school and I don't need public encouragement to keep feeding the formaldehyde into my system."

The door shushed open and McCoy said, "No."

"Come on, cousin," Spencer wheedled from the door. "It's your first week here."

"I'm not your cousin," the doctor corrected him. "And my grandma ran screaming from you hillbillies for a reason and I am not about to go questioning the most sensible person I ever knew."

Spencer favoured the back of McCoy's head with a mild expression which was frightening for its lack of offense, but no laser rays appeared. "Third cousin," he said mildly, then glanced up at Jim. "Coming, Kirk?"

Which was really the fortuitous part of the arrangement. Freshman cadets at Starfleet were given fourth-year sponsors in their career track to show them the ropes and guide them around campus, and introduce them to wider San Francisco; but Jim's Command-track guide had been a somewhat retiring lesbian specializing in close-orbit combat procedures who returned to the library carrel with her name on it as soon as Jim's campus tour was done, and Bones's had been... a demi-Griffith.

(Because you quite clearly lacked the full Griffith experience with only one of them.)

Jim was quite happy to rescue his roommate and new bosom buddy from the octopodal embrace of is long-lost relatives; they, for their part, seemed willing to leaved Bones alone when it became clear that in Jim they found, not a cousin, but an heir. To begin with, they were imparting their knowledge of San Francisco's drinking establishments and drilling him in Russian--but given that Spencer had already talked three of the senior professors into taking Jim on as a student, he had no doubt he'd hit on just the right people he needed.

"Bones," Jim said, "You can hold down the fort without me, right?"

"I'll be staging an orgy as soon as you leave," Bones said, not looking up from his PADD.

"Oh, with those girls down the hall? Did you get her name?" Bones shook his head, but an expression Spencer covered up made Jim turn on him suspiciously. "You?"

"Nnnnot telling," Spence drew out. "You can't manage that one for yourself, I don't even know what I'm doing with you."

Stray Weechesters
John isn't entirely clear how he lost his boys. He'd stopped by the home of an guy he'd served with, hoping to find somewhere to stay for a few days between hunts, then a few days had turned into a week, and then when he'd finally been ready to leave Sassy had took him aside for a Talk. Look at them, she said. Look at how thin they are. When was the last time they had a proper meal? Sam's going should be starting school soon, they're both such bright boys, what kind of education can you give them with the life you're living? And somehow when he drove off he left them behind, not entirely sure he had as much choice in the matter as it appeared.

And now... now John has to admit, maybe they're better off. He makes sure to swing south to see them regularly. He can't remember them ever being as happy as they are now, running around the yard with two other boys around their age under the watchful eye of their cousin Cameron. They're safer, too; John seeks out trouble, not avoids it, and some day he might have dragged them into something and got them hurt, or died and left them to the mercies of social services. The Mitchells are no fools, either, and they know that humans aren't the only dangers out in the world. Maybe when Dean and Sam are older John'll teach them to hunt those things, but he knows that it'll be up to them what they do with that knowledge. In his more clear-headed moments it's that which he's most grateful for; they'll have a choice that he never had, and that he might have made for them if things had gone differently.

Re: Stray Weechesters
(Oooh! Plotbunnies!)

Dean kinda blacks out in anger when he comes out of the convenience store and sees who's leaning against his car, which in the end is kind of fortunate because if he hadn't been so fucking angry he would have thrown his entire bag of supplies at Sam's head and then had to buy more. "What," he spat, "are you doing here?"

"Borrowed my girlfriend's car," Sam gestures over his shoulder. "Thought you could use some help."

"I called Stephen, put him on standby. If I need help, I'll ask for it."

Sam folds his arms. "And he's just, what, gonna get an instant week's pass from his CO? Sorry, gotta go hunt demons? No, and Annabeth will kick your ass." When his brother makes a frustrated, inarticuate motion, Sam tilts his head. "Midterms are over. I just aced my LSAT. Jess is gonna turn my papers in for me. And Dad's missing. You're not going to get me to go away."

Dean tries to come up with a threat. He tries to come up with an argument.

"Then I get to pick the music," he finally manages.

"Sure you do." Sam grins. "And I get to follow you in a different car."

Oh. My. God. I think you've found a goldmine! I just love the idea of Sam and Dean growing up in the bosom (shut up, Dean) of the Mitchells.

Sam, and Spence, and Skip and Dean would be one hell of a lot of charm to resist and could raise so much hell.

And after the anguish of the past two seasons, it kinda warms my heart to think of a world where the boys grew up that way - taken care of and with people Dean could take care of in turn while Sammy hares off to higher ed, since there's no way things would go down as they have in this 'verse. *is a sap*
